  8. Welcome to Metro Navigator Routing and Mapping CD-ROM. 
  9. Based on Navigation Technology's mapping databases, 
  10. which contain the most accurate and up-to-date mapping 
  11. data available, Metro Navigator can help you get around 
  12. major metropolitan cities by drawing maps and plotting 
  13. routes based on information you provide.  The most 
  14. recent Frommer's Travel Guides information is also 
  15. included for each city, so you can select Frommer's 
  16. information in Metro Navigator to decide on a 
  17. restaurant, tour the city or find the nearest golf 
  18. course.

  20. Metro Navigator covers a broad metropolitan area that 
  21. extends well beyond the heart of the city.  This allows 
  22. you to plan extended travel routes beyond the city 
  23. limits for either business or pleasure.

  26.                 System Requirements

  29. MPC compatible system including: 
  30. 33 mHz 80486 or better CPU 
  31. 16 MB RAM or higher 
  32. MS Windows« v3.1 or higher, Windows« NT v3.5 or higher, 
  33. or Windows« 95 v1.0 
  34. 640 x 480 256 Color VGA Display. 
  35. Higher resolutions may be used. 
  36. Sound card recommended.

  38. A sound card is recommended for playing the intro audio  
  39. and the Frommer's Top Attractions slide show audio. 
  40.  
  41. Double speed CD-ROM drive or better.  A single speed 
  42. drive may be used, but program performance will suffer. 
  43.  
  44. Note:  Although Metro Navigator is supplied as a 32-bit 
  45. program for Windows« 95 use, the discs do not support 
  46. autoplay (automatically running Metro Navigator when the 
  47. disc is inserted).  This is to ensure that there is no 
  48. conflict when discs are changed during the program.  
  49. In addition, Metro Navigator does not support the 
  50. Windows« 95 automatic removal feature.

  53.                 Installation Instructions 
  54. ********************************************************

  56. Insert the Metro Navigator disc into your CD-ROM drive. 
  57. From the Windows« Program Manager, select RUN from the 
  58. File menu. 
  59.  
  60. Type the following command at the prompt: d:\setup. 
  61. Then click OK. (If necessary, replace "d" with the 
  62. letter of your CD-ROM drive.) The installation program 
  63. for Metro Navigator will start and prompt you for 
  64. information on where to install the Metro Navigator 
  65. program and support files.  (Alternatively you may 
  66. select the CD-ROM icon from the File Manager and double 
  67. click on the setup.exe program.)

  69. During program installation, the installer will ask 
  70. which cities you wish to install on your hard drive. 
  71. Cities that you select to install will run noticeably 
  72. faster, but more of your hard drive space will be used 
  73. up (45 - 175 megabytes depending on the city).  Any city 
  74. that you install can be run without the CD-ROM in the 
  75. drive.  Next, you will be asked to select accelerated 
  76. cities.  Accelerated cities are cities that have some 
  77. critical data files installed to the hard drive to 
  78. increase performance, but don't use up nearly the amount 
  79. of hard drive space that a fully installed city does 
  80. (1 - 7 megabytes depending on the city).  The CD-ROM 
  81. must be in the drive to run accelerated cities.

  83. Notes:  
  84. Under certain circumstances, the display of the 
  85. amount of space required is not completely accurate.  If 
  86. your selected cities will not install try clearing some 
  87. extra hard drive space and reinstalling.

  89. These installation instruction apply to Windows« 3.11,  
  90. Windows« NT and Windows« 95.

  96. CITIES 
  97. When inserting a city name from the Main Menu of Metro 
  98. Navigator, try to be as specific as possible.  Use the 
  99. city proper name instead of the neighborhood name. 
  100. For instance: 
  101.  
  102.         Wrong: Crystal City 
  103.  
  104.         Right: Arlington 
  105.  
  106. Alternatively, omit the city name altogether and let 
  107. Metro Navigator present a list of possible matches 
  108. for the address you have typed in.  You may then 
  109. select the address from the list by double clicking 
  110. on it. 
  111.  
  112. New York City, in particular, poses some additional  
  113. challenges when entering the city name.  The proper  
  114. format for an address in New York City is  
  115. "NEW YORK CITY-borough", i.e., "NEW YORK CITY-BROOKLYN". 
  116.  
  117. Metro Navigator does not support abbreviated city names 
  118. such as LA for Los Angeles and NYC for New York City. 
  119.  
  120.  
  121. STREET NAMES
  122. When searching or inputting an address name that is 
  123. also known as a direction (North, South, East, West), 
  124. double quotes should be used.  For example:
  125.  
  126.         Wrong: North St
  127.  
  128.         Right: "North" St
  129.  
  130. Also, be sure to use double quotes when any part of
  131. the street address (road name identifier only) has any 
  132. sort of road description associated with its name (Dr, St,
  133. Rd, etc.).  For example:
  134.  
  135.         Wrong: Dr. Phillips Drive
  136.  
  137.         Right: "Dr. Phillips" Drive
  138.  
  139. Note:
  140. Quotes should only be used on the addresses
  141. name and not on the type of road.  If you are
  142. have any problems finding an address try using 
  143. quotes to help you.
  144.

  146. COPYING 
  147. You can copy textual directions from Metro Navigator 
  148. by performing the following steps. 
  149.  
  150. 1)      Select addresses in the route list and calculate
  151.         route. 
  152. 2)      When the directions come up in the routing 
  153.         results screen, select the directions using the 
  154.         mouse.  Click at the top portion of the 
  155.         directions, hold down the mouse button and drag 
  156.         the mouse pointer to the end of the directions. 
  157. 3)      Using the keyboard hit Ctrl C.  This will copy 
  158.         the text to the clipboard. 
  159. 4)      Once the text is in the clipboard you can paste 
  160.         it into a multitude of applications, such as 
  161.         Microsoft« Word, Microsoft« Excel, Power Point, 
  162.         Notepad, Paintbrush, etc.

  165. DELETING ROUTE LIST ENTRY 
  166. When an address is selected from the Route List the 
  167. entire entry can be deleted by hitting the DELETE button 
  168. on this menu or hitting ALT D from the keyboard.  
  169. Individual characters in each entry field can be deleted 
  170. by using the keyboard BACKSPACE button.

  173. SEARCHING 
  174. In using the Go To feature in the Map and Main Menu you  
  175. can not only type in the address, but you can also 
  176. search based on the name field.  The program will search 
  177. your Address Book, Other Places, Restaurants, and Hotels 
  178. in this order.

  181. THE MAP 
  182. The map is one feature of Metro Navigator that will run 
  183. distinctly faster if the city is installed to your 
  184. hard drive.  If you opt not to install the city, but 
  185. do not wish to endure multiple slow redraws of the map 
  186. in order to zoom in on an area, remember that you can 
  187. place your cursor over the area that you want to zoom 
  188. in on and press a number key (1 through # of zoom 
  189. levels) to go directly to the level of detail that you 
  190. want.

  192. Also, keep in mind that the LEFT mouse button is used to 
  193. zoom in, and the RIGHT mouse button is used to zoom out. 
  194.  
  195. When the route list is open over the map you can use the
  196. RIGHT mouse button to center the map on any address in
  197. the route list.  The LEFT mouse button can be used to
  198. select addresses from the route list and to drag and
  199. drop addresses to reorder them.

  201. NUMBERS
  202. When inserting a numbered street be sure to type in the
  203. NUMBER instead of the textual representation.
  204. For instance:

  206.         Wrong: Sixth Street

  208.         Right: 6th Street

  210. Also, when the lists of hotels, restaurants and other 
  211. places are sorted alphabetically, numbered data items
  212. will be listed in the beginning of the list prior to 
  213. the textual items.
